L’Association for Language Awareness (ALA) lance un nouveau format de dissémination scientifique, intitulé: Digital talks on language awareness – Language Learning, Language Teaching and Language Use in Local, National and global Perspectives (2026 à 2028).

La première édition aura lieu lundi 28 septembre de 17h à 17h45, avec la présentation de Prof. Claudia Finkbeiner: Language Awareness and Linguistic Diversité: From the Early Days into the AI Era.

La participation aux conférences est gratuite et ne nécessite pas d’inscription préalable.

Stereotyped language related to gender, race and ethnicity in digital dictionaries and thesauri

Objectives:
In the 21st century, stereotypical language is still widespread, accumulated in dictionaries, reinforcing stereotypes in easy online access. IRP4 aims therefore to:
1) analyse the representation of gender, race and ethnicity in digital (corpus-based) mono-/multilingual dictionaries and user interfaces (e.g. word thesaurus) to uncover fairness harms and discrimination against diverse demographic groups in lexical entries in terms of definitions, “typical” examples, collocations and synonyms;
2) raise users’ and developers’ Critical Language Awareness of stereotypical representations arising, among others, from biased internal datasets, e.g. digital corpora mainly relying on newspaper texts (collocations such as woman+raped/abused; Syrian+criminal/terrorist/arrested);
3) disclose outdated role models that are perpetuated in new technologies;
4) establish a set of measures to confront biases and stereotypical representations in digital resources aimed at civil society, e.g., by optimising underlying datasets with associated partners.

Expected Results:
o A comprehensive picture of gender, race and ethnicity’s stereotypes rooted in digital mono- and multilingual dictionaries;
o List of data sources that allow a non-biased representation;
o Reduce fairness harms in widely used online dictionaries and user-interfaces

Multilingual gender fairness in AI-generated texts

Compétences linguistiques : outre l’allemand et l’anglais, une maîtrise du danois (le cas échéant norvégien ou le suédois) et / ou du français est souhaitée.

Objectives:
Despite major advances in GenAI, stereotyping and biases are ubiquitous in texts generated by AI technologies, which runs counter to a European society committed to gender equality. The doctoral candidate will:
1) investigate texts generated by leading LLMs (e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Mistral’s Le Chat) in terms of gender fairness with a focus on languages other than EN (e.g. DA, FR, DE);
2) explore the impact of linguistic factors (i.e. linguistic bias), specifically the effects of grammatically un/gendered languages and the masculine default, on gendered representations using corpus linguistic methods;
3) reveal how AI tools echo and reinforce human bias as well as raise Critical Multilingual Language Awareness among users and developers of how LLMs index gender-related structures of power;
4) contribute to enhancing the dialogue between linguists and computer scientists to confront sexism in GenAI technologies with the Associated Partners.

Expected Results:
o Dataset of AI-generated texts in three languages;
o In-depth analysis of gendered representations in AI-generated texts and the impact of linguistic factors;
o Proposal of language-specific measures to confront algorithmic discrimination against women in AI technologies to reduce harm caused by biased systems;
o Two podcasts aimed at non-expert audience during the secondment at RHET-AI.

Language policies in France, Germany and Luxembourg: A Multidimensional Comparative Analysis of Institutional Actors and Critical Multilingual Language Awareness

Objectives:
Whereas France has been undertaking the codification of FR since the 16th century, supported by legal state institutions for language policy, Germany has no such centralised institutionalisation. In Luxembourg, the linguistic situation is characterised by the use and recognition of three official languages: FR, DE and national language LB (cf. the law from 1984 and article 4 of the Constitution, amended 2023). To compare these approaches, IRP7 will explore Critical Multilingual Language Awareness by:
1) analysing the different actors and forces involved to codify a standard written language use at a national level;
2) conducting an empirical study of statements or judgements on / about language and language norms and ideologies in FR and DE, in connection with IRP2, on the basis of i) institutional language policy texts and ii) online dictionaries;
3) comparing the results to language policy in Luxembourg and its implementation in the plurilingual Lëtzerbuerger Online Dictionnaire of the Zenter fir d’Lëtzebuerger Sprooch (ZLS).

Expected Results:
o New theoretical insights into the Critical Multilingual Language Awareness form in order to advance Language Awareness research regarding the institutional national level;
o A comprehensive comparison of the language ideologies and actors at the heart of regulation in language policy in 3 neighboring EU countries;
o In-depth analysis of the normative and/or descriptive positions behind the codification of standard writing in FR/DE/LB;
o Recommendations to increase Critical Multilingual Language Awareness of institutional actors, enabling citizens of each country to develop plurilingual competences in an equitable manner

Pour être considérés comme éligibles, les candidates et candidats doivent remplir les conditions suivantes :

1. Ne pas être titulaire d’un doctorat à la date du recrutement.

2. Être titulaire d’un Master of Arts, d’un Master of Translation, d’un Master of Education ou d’un Master of Science (MSc) ou d’un diplôme équivalent en linguistique ou dans des disciplines apparentées, qui confère au candidat et à la candidate les connaissances requises pour le projet MultiLAwa, et avoir obtenu d’excellentes notes dans le cadre du Master.

3. Respecter la règle de mobilité des actions Marie Skłodowska-Curie – Doctoral Networks.

4. Compétences linguistiques : un niveau B2 en allemand et en anglais est requis au moment des candidatures. La maîtrise d’autres langues constitue un atout, selon les objectifs du projet individuel de recherche.

Journées franco-allemandes des MSH du Grand-Est – 26 et 27 mars 2026 – Nancy

Les 26 et 27 mars 2026, à la MSH Lorraine (Nancy), se tiendra la 4ème édition des Journées franco-allemandes des MSH du Grand-Est, co-organisées par le Germanopôle Lorrain (MSH L) et le Germanopôle Alsace (MISHA), en collaboration avec le CIERA et le Goethe Institut Nancy.

Intitulée « Langue et pouvoir – Approches interdisciplinaires sous l’angle du franco-allemand », la manifestation vise à interroger les liens qui existent entre « langue » et « pouvoir », en faisant dialoguer des spécialistes des sciences du langage / linguistique, de littérature, d’histoire ancienne, moderne et contemporaine, des sciences politiques, ou encore de l’intersection de différentes disciplines, à l’instar de la « politolinguistique ».

La deuxième séance du cycle de conférences « Langage – Démocratie – Société », co-organisé par le Germanopôle lorrain de la MSH Lorraine et le Goethe Institut Nancy, avec le soutien financier du CIERA, se déroulera mercredi 11 février 2026 à 18h30 à la MSH Lorraine à Nancy, 91 avenue de la Libération, dans la Salle internationale.

Nous aurons le plaisir d’entendre Heidrun KÄMPER, professeure émérite de linguistique allemande et de politolinguistique (Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache et Universität Mannheim), qui donnera une conférence intitulée :

Résumé:
Die sprachliche Umbruchgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts ist auch eine Geschichte der sprachlichen Demokratisierung, genauer: der Entwicklung von in weitestem Sinn demokratiebezogenen Wortschätzen, Konzepten und Kommunikationsformen, sowie der entsprechenden semantischen und kommunikativen Kontroversen. Der Beitrag rekonstruiert diese Geschichte und fokussiert dabei insbesondere den Aspekt der ethischen Grundlegung von Demokratie im 20. Jahrhundert. Dazu werden u.a. die Kodierungen der Grundrechte in der Weimarer Reichsverfassung und im Grundgesetz verglichen. Mit dieser Perspektive wird dann ein Bezug zur Gegenwart hergestellt, insbesondere zum rechten politischen Diskurs und der dort ausgedrückten Haltung zu den in der Verfassung definierten und als Festlegung politischen und gesellschaftlichen Handelns festgelegten Grund- und Menschenrechten. Gewalt in der Sprache wird dabei eine besondere Rolle spielen. Damit und mit einem Plädoyer für die Würde der Sprache stellt der Beitrag auch einen Bezug zur gesellschaftlichen Aufgabe der Linguistik in der Demokratie dar.

Dans le cadre de ses manifestations scientifiques, le laboratoire de l’ATILF (Analyse et Traitement Informatique de la Langue Française, UMR 7118), a le plaisir d’accueillir, vendredi 12 décembre 2025 à 10h30, Mme Kathrin Kunkel-Razum, directrice de la rédaction Duden de 2016 à 2024, qui donnera une conférence en anglais intitulée:
Die Päpstin, die Vorständin and der/die Forschende in the dictionary: How is gender represented in German and how do dictionary editors in Germany deal with this issue?.

Abstract:
The linguistic representation of gender in the German language and in monolingual German dictionaries (‘gendering’) has sparked many heated debates in Germany in recent years.
In my lecture, I will first give a brief overview of the forms of gendering in German since the 1980s and how society has reflected on this issue. I will then explain the process of establishing a position on this topic in the Duden editorial office at the end of the 1990s and the implementation of the (discussion and research) results in dictionaries over the last 30 years. My observations will focus on the changes made by the editorial team to entries from 2021 onwards, particularly in Duden online, and their consequences for the form of the generic masculine and its use. I will also show that there is no one form that is suitable for all dictionaries, but that the representations in the various dictionaries differ depending on the target audience.
Finally, I take a look at spelling issues related to the use of so-called gender symbols such as the gender star (Lehrer*innen) and gender colon (Lehrer:innen) and the current regulatory status in the seven member states of the Council for German Spelling.

Cycle de conférences « Langage – Démocratie – Société » (Nancy) – inauguration : 14 septembre 2025

Le Germanopôle lorrain de la MSH L (Université de Lorraine) et le Goethe Institut Nancy lancent un nouveau cycle de conférences conjoint, intitulé « Langage – Démocratie – Société », qui s’inscrit dans une perspective à la fois franco-allemande et interdisciplinaire.

La première manifestation aura lieu dimanche 14 septembre au Goethe Institut, en coopération avec le Livre sur la place, « Les maux du fascisme », avec la participation notamment d’Olivier Mannoni, traducteur littéraire, auteur de Traduire Hitler et Coulée brune.

Les manifestations se déroulent en alternance sur les deux sites, Goethe Institut Nancy et MSH Lorraine. Le cycle est soutenu par le programme « Hors-les-murs » du CIERA.
